Blockbuster? Apple may have made its name on hardware, but the company is quickly branching out to media, with news that it may be working on a video streaming service similar to Netflix.
One that may become available next year.
This bit of intelligence comes from an analyst who claims that the Cupertino based technology company plans to unveil it during the course of 2018. Paolo Pescatore, vice president of multiplay and media at CCS Insight, revealed this in an interview to CNBC.
With the analyst revealing that although this new service would focus mostly on original content, which the company is in a position to offer, it will not be as easy as it sounds as the company’s previous TV shows, Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke: The Series, have not exactly been successful.
Nevertheless, Apple is still interested in making a play for video streaming:
“Everyone is jostling for position and everyone is jumping in on the area of video. When you look at Apple, it has a very strong hardware offering and their services business is on the march. The real battleground is in the area of original content, but original content would feature prominent and Apple would be very well placed to do that.”
The company appears to be looking into more such content to lift its streaming subscription service. It, very recently, landed a new TV drama series from Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
Ultimately, becoming a Netflix rival overnight is not something that any company can do, even Apple.
But that’s certainly not stopping Apple from making moves in this highly dynamic field. It can most definitely match what Netflix, Amazon and Disney are spending on their own streaming services, and it will all come to whether the original content resonates with the continuously growing audience.
2018 just got a little more interesting!
