I have $500 to spend and was wondering what to get. Not an expert on this so any suggestions are appreciated.

Something that will fit your budget nicely is the Pioneer VSX-LX102. It’s usually $450 and it has all the bells and whistles you would need except for the two-zone audio. That means you can’t use this to power up other speakers in a separate room.

While it is a bit out of your budget (but it’s well worth the extra $50) Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A670 is a great option. At $550 it is superior to the Pioneer VSX-LX102 in every area.

I second what Andy said. I think the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A670 is one of the best av receivers below $1000. You should definitely at least test it out.

I think the Sony STR-DN 1080 is one of the best av receivers for your budget. Its price is $600 but it’s always discounted at around $400 and for this kind of money you should really get it.

If you can find the Sony STR-DN 1080 for $400 then that is the best option. If not, try to get the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A670 and if that’s not available then you should aim for the Pioneer VSX-LX102.
