It depends on what kind of a budget you have. For a lower budget, I recommend the Yamaha RX-V683 which you should be able to find below $600.

Hey, just looked at the RX-V683 and after reading a bit about it and some reviews, it looks like a really good one especially for that kind of money.

Liberty0, yes, the price is very good for it. And it has the Silent Cinema features which is a MUST for anyone with a home theater. Plus everything can be controlled from an app on your smartphone.

I recommend the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1070. You won’t need anything else. It’s a bit in the high-end range (price wise) but it will beat a lot of the high-end av receivers out there. Allows wireless audio streaming from other devices, delivers 110wpc and it has a built-in test tone generator (which will determine the best output levels for the room you have).

Thanks for the suggestions, guys and gals. I’m liking the price on the V683 but the AVENTAGE-A1070 looks like a beast. It’s clearly a solid choice but would like to hear more suggestions before I make up my mind.

Since no one mentioned it, I think the Denon AVR-X4300H is also a good option. I have a friend who owns it and the audio is really immersive. I haven’t really seen a better one yet.

125 watts-per-channel!! WOW! That’s more than the AVENTAGE recommended above. I wasn’t expecting it to be that powerful and a lot of people are saying cool things about this. Will have a closer look at it for sure.

Not only that but you can set up from 9 to 11 channels worth of speakers and then you’ll be all set, I’ll tell you that. And don’t worry, it’s not difficult to do.

None. It’s fully compatible with everything I have thrown at it. 1080p or 4K upscaling are there if you need them.

Looks nice but it can never outmatch the Yamaha AVENTAGE A-1070.

I actually have heard the Onkyo TX0NR676 do its thing and it’s pretty good and cheap. And the 777 should be better or so I hear.

I like the Sony STR-DN1080. It’s very affordable and much better than anything in its price range. The audio performance surprised me first time I heard it. I recommend installing the Sony SongPal app and turning the receiver into a wireless multi-room system when you combine it with other audio devices from Sony.

KevinT, this is about the price but in some cases, it’s also about the space you have. If you have a smaller space, why not look at the Marantz NR1608. It’s as slim as you can get and offers a very good performance. And it doesn't cost a fortune.

Space is not an issue for me but that’s for the suggestion. The Marantz looks like a good option.

I like the Sony you’ve mentioned. Do you think the sound quality is as good as a Yamaha?

Well, Sony is good but probably not as good as Yamaha overall. I got the Sony one because a friend had one and I could test it out before hand and I also got it with a discount so it was a no-brainer.

Very interesting thread. I've learned a lot and actually made a list of good av receivers to look at. Will follow along to see what other models will be shared here. Thanks!
