I don’t know much about picking a good receiver and have heard that Denon might be a good options. Is this correct? How good are Denon receivers?

Yes, Denon is a good option for both a beginner and an advanced user. They offer good price/quality and I think they are among the top 3-4 companies in this industry.

Denon is a good brand to start with. For example, their Denon AVR S730H is one of the best there is in it’s price range (and can also beat a few higher priced models as well). It has everything you’ll need for years to come and it’s very affordable at $350-$400. A very important benefit it has, that people often overlook, is its ability to be connected to somewhat older audio equipment. This can be very important for someone who’s on a budget.

Denon is good and I would also recommend you take a look at Yamaha and Sony (models priced between $300 and $500) and pick from those. For a maximum $500 you should be able to find something very good.

Zamdo, I’m curious why you didn’t mention Onkyo. They also have some good decent priced models.

I don’t think Onkyo models are better than Yamaha, Denon or Sony. This is just my personal opinion based on personal experience.

Have you had an Onkyo and had problems with it?

I know people who own Onkyo and there are certain issues with them. It seems that some of their models (the cheaper ones mainly) are built with cheap parts which leads to problems down the line. That’s why I wouldn’t buy any of their models.
